Pupils were assessed in year 1 using the ‘2019 Phonics Screening Check’ paper (available below). This screening check assessed how well a child can use their understanding of phonics to decode real and nonsense (pseudo) words.

The pass mark for the 2019 Phonics Screening Check was 32 out of 40, meaning children had to correctly read out loud to their teacher at least 32 of the 40 words.
Past papers are a good way of showing you and your child the sort of words that they will be expected to read in their own Phonics Screening Check. It allows you to see the mix of real and nonsense words that were used in the 2019 screening checks.
