Pupils will be assessed in year 1 using the ‘2021 Phonics Screening Check’ paper. This screening check will assess how well a child can use their understanding of phonics to decode real and nonsense (pseudo) words.

The pass mark for the 2021 Phonics Screening Check is 32 out of 40, meaning children need to correctly read out loud to their teacher at least 32 of the 40 words.
The upcoming phonics screening check is due to take place in June 2021 and will be available here once all schools have completed the check.
