Screening Check Practice
Game Version 1.0 (Last updated 20/08/2026)
Sound out each word by pointing to each letter or group of letters and saying the sound, then blend the sounds together. Encourage children to read independently when ready.
This practice mirrors the Phonics Screening Check. The child reads each word aloud, then an adult marks it - tick for correct or cross for incorrect.
Practise with real words or monster names, which are pseudo (fake) words. More than one pronunciation can be correct if it is a plausible way of decoding the word.
Be patient and encouraging. The check assesses phonics skills and helps identify where extra support may be needed, so keep practice relaxed and positive.
